The RiCON Delirium & Rehabilitation Group brings together multidisciplinary critical care colleagues from across Greater Manchester. The group works collaboratively to improve the prevention, recognition and management of delirium, while supporting effective rehabilitation and recovery during and after a patient’s critical care stay.

By sharing learning and comparing practice, members develop practical, patient-centred approaches that reduce variation and improve continuity of care. Recent priorities include improving understanding and reporting of the ACC18 and ACC19 rehabilitation quality measures, developing and testing a structured rehabilitation prescription, and strengthening handover and follow-up after discharge from critical care.

Recognising and assessing delirium
Delirium is an acute confusional state that is common in critically ill patients, making timely recognition and appropriate management essential. Assessment tools such as CAM-ICU can help critical care staff evaluate a patient’s cognitive state consistently. A pocket-sized CAM-ICU card is available to download below for use in clinical practice.

Learning resources
The training video below demonstrates how to complete a CAM-ICU assessment and can be used to support colleagues who are new to critical care. New starters may also benefit from completing the delirium e-learning module, which takes approximately 20 minutes and includes a short assessment. The module provides useful information for nursing staff on the different types of delirium and practical approaches to caring for a patient experiencing delirium.
